The Summer of Blue Comets is a story that defies genre boundaries: psychological thriller, paranormal drama, coming-of-age novel and noir come together in an intense, lyrical and disturbing narrative. Piergiorgio Pulixi constructs an enveloping story in which evil is never shouted, but whispered between the lines of a broken and aching memory. The story of Michele Rivalta is that of a modern Orpheus, who descended into the underworld of the past to seek his truths, and returned to the surface with a dark gift: the ability to see beyond the veil of death. As in the novels of Stephen King, whom Pulixi pays homage to here, adolescence is the scene of real and symbolic horrors. The supernatural is a metaphor for exclusion, trauma, and latent power. Like Carrie, Michele is a "different" marked by a disturbed mother and a power she cannot handle. The tale reads like a fever dream, with the heartbreaking beauty of things that should not exist. Between electric visions, silent ghosts and cathartic rains, The Summer of Blue Comets is a coming-of-age story that leaves its mark, like a scar on the heart.
